Gulf History Transcribe-a-thon [Cancelled]

Please note that we’ve unfortunately had to cancel today’s Transcribe-a-thon due to an issue with the Transcribus software

Part of the Knowledge Futures project

At the “Gulf History Transcribe-a-thon” we will be working collectively on a project that brings together AI and historical documents. We will be transcribing texts, and correcting computer-generated transcriptions of texts, in English and Arabic. You do not need to know both languages to attend!

We will be working with a historical document about the Gulf written in English, Arabic and Persian entitled "Biographical Histories of Noteworthy Persons" (1852-1884). This text is a who's who of important people in the region written in a moment when much knowledge was produced about colonial officials, not locals.

Objectives:

  1. Make a historical source about the region more accessible to the world.

  2. Learn some about how AI can learn to read handwritten document.

  3. Learn how to tag entities and think about the specificities for Arabic.

  4. Be a citizen scientist for the night!

Timeline:

5:00-5:10   Getting settled with dinner
5:10-5:20 Instructions for transcribing / tagging
5:20-6:05 Transcribing
6:05-6:15 Share out
6:15-7:00 Continuing to transcribe
