Call for Applications: Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World

Studying the Arab World

The NYU Abu Dhabi Research Institute invites scholars who wish to contribute to the vibrant research culture of NYUAD’s Saadiyat campus to apply for a residential fellowship during Academic Year 2023-2024.

The Institute welcomes applications from scholars working in all areas of the Humanities related to the study of the Arab world, its rich literature and history, its cultural and artistic heritage, and its manifold connections with other cultures. This includes, among others, (Early) Islamic Intellectual History and Culture, any areas of particular relevance to the MENASA region, as well as projects thematically connected to existing research projects and initiatives at NYUAD’s divisions of Arts and Humanities and Social Sciences. We particularly welcome interdisciplinary research applications.

Both distinguished scholars with an established reputation and promising scholars who are early in their careers may apply for a research fellowship.

Each fellow receives a competitive stipend commensurate with experience, housing, health insurance, work/office space on campus, full access to NYUAD’s library facilities (with close connections to NYU’s main library in New York), research allowance, an opportunity to host a small workshop funded by the Research Institute, and support for travel to and from Abu Dhabi.

Applications for the 2023–24 academic year are now closed.

Fellowship applicants are asked to apply via Interfolio and to upload all required documents (see below). Applicants will also be asked to provide names and contact information for three references. References will receive an email prompt inviting them to upload a letter of recommendation on behalf of the applicant. All letters are also due by October 3, 2022. We strongly recommend applicants read through our FAQ before beginning their application.

Eligibility and Requirements

Eligible applicants will have received documents attesting to the completion of their PhDs by September 1, 2023. Successful candidates will be asked to submit these documents prior to the start of the Fellowship.

Distinguished scholars with an outstanding scholarly accomplishment, including an internationally recognized publication record; mid-career scholars with strong publication records and exceptional scholarly promise; as well as early-career scholars, with a strong record of scholarly accomplishment, who wish to turn their doctoral dissertations into book manuscripts publishable with major academic presses are encouraged to apply.

All fellowships will be offered to scholars who demonstrate an interest in playing an active role in the intellectual community of NYUAD, in particular by exchanging ideas with other fellows, faculty, and students. The fellowships are open to scholars of all backgrounds and nationalities.

In addition to conducting their own research, fellows are expected to play an active role in the intellectual life of the NYUAD campus. All fellows are required to participate in the bi-weekly Humanities Research Seminar, a colloquium for the discussion of pre-circulated research papers. In addition to presentations by fellows, the Seminar may feature presentations by NYUAD faculty, other NYU faculty who are in residence at NYUAD, UAE scholars, and other invited speakers. Seminar sessions will also be open to graduate students and a select group of undergraduate students from NYUAD, and to UAE-based scholars with relevant expertise.

Fellows may also be invited to contribute to the Institute's community outreach program, for example by serving as invited speakers in the public evening lecture program or participating in one of the international workshops organized by the Institute. They may also be asked on occasion to serve informally as mentors to scholars engaged in research in areas of their expertise. Fellows may request the opportunity to teach a course at NYUAD and may apply for teaching opportunities at NYUAD following their fellowships.

The Institute hosts up to six fellows each year.

For the period of their fellowships, fellows are offered work/office space at the Institute; full use of of NYUAD's library facilities (which are substantial, closely connected as they are to NYU's main library in New York); administrative support; housing or housing allowance; a fellowship stipend commensurate with experience; a personal research allowance; an opportunity to host a small workshop funded by the Research Institute; and support for travel to and from Abu Dhabi.

Fellowship recipients are responsible for conforming to tax requirements of their home countries.

Applications are due by October 3, 2022 and must be submitted through Interfolio.

Scholars who received their PhDs within the last five years are required to submit the following documents:

Curriculum vitae (up to 4 pages)

FAQ

We do not accept applications from other degree holders.

Eligible applicants will have received documents attesting to the completion of their PhDs by September 1, 2023. Successful candidates will be asked to submit these documents prior to the start of the Fellowship.

Scholars may apply for one- or two-semester fellowships.

Currently, we are accepting applications for fall 2023, spring 2024, or the full 2023-2024 academic year.

If your dissertation was completed in a language other than English, you may submit the required 50-page excerpt in the original language with 2-3 pages (e.g., the abstract) translated into English. In this case, the selection committee would also appreciate an additional writing sample in English, as part of the eligibility requirements is fluency in English.

We do not accept supplementary materials with applications; any supplementary materials that are received will not be considered in the review of applications.

Applicants will be notified in early 2023.

We have a large (and very strong) pool of candidates, and reviews are performed by an international panel of scholars. The process is such that it is not possible for us to provide individual feedback.

The number of fellows in residence fluctuates each year. In general, the program offers up to six research fellowships each year.

At this point, we are unable to provide an exact range of salaries that will be offered but can say that they will be competitive and commensurate with experience. Please see the Awards and Facilities section for more information.

The program focuses on the Arab world broadly defined, which also includes the MENASA region.
