Call for Applications: Research Writing Retreat

The Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World program invites distinguished scholars to apply for its Research Writing Retreat, to be held from January 12-23, 2026 and May 11-22, 2026. Taking place at NYU Abu Dhabi, this two-week retreat aims to foster a scholarly community for up to 8 scholars from around the world and to advance research projects in all areas of the Humanities related to the study of the Arab world, its rich literature and history, its cultural and artistic heritage, and its manifold connections with other cultures. Scholars will have the opportunity to work on any type of academic writing including a research article, book manuscript, chapter or essay. 

We welcome applications from international senior scholars with an outstanding scholarly accomplishment, including an internationally recognized publication record and mid-career scholars with strong publication records and exceptional scholarly promise and encouraged to apply.

Applicants may indicate their preferred term (Winter or Spring) and we will do our best to accommodate these preferences. Final placements will be determined based on cohort availability and budget confirmation.

The fellowship will arrange and cover the costs of the scholar’s travel costs to and from Abu Dhabi and their accommodation and meals for the duration of the two-week retreat.

Expectations during the residency:

  • Three group dinners with fellow scholars and select NYUAD faculty

  • One lunch meeting with NYUAD faculty or HRF Research Fellow

  • One evening research panel presentation

 

Required Materials:

Applicants are asked to apply via Interfolio and to upload all required documents:

  • Curriculum Vitae (up to 4 pages)

  • Research Proposal (3-5 pages including references): including arguments, themes and significance to the field; methods and work plan and final product and dissemination

  • Short Answer Form: including abstract of project; relevance to the UAE/NYUAD HRF residency
