Call for Applications: Research Writing Residency

The Humanities Research Fellowship for the Study of the Arab World invites applications from mid-career and senior scholars for its Research Writing Residency, to be held at NYU Abu Dhabi from January 11–29, 2027.

The three-week residency will bring together up to eight scholars from around the world to advance an existing research project toward completion. We welcome projects in all areas of the Humanities related to the study of the Arab world, its rich literature and history, its cultural and artistic heritage, and its manifold connections with other cultures.

The residency is designed for scholars who are already well advanced in a research project and are in the writing, revision, or final stages of completing it.

The fellowship will cover travel to and from Abu Dhabi, accommodation, and meals for the duration of the residency.

Expectations during the residency:

One weekend writing seminar with NYUAD faculty and fellows
One research panel presentation
Two group dinners with fellow scholars and select NYUAD faculty
One individual meeting with NYUAD faculty or HRF Research Fellow

Applicants must be mid-career or senior academics who are at least five years post-PhD, MFA, or an equivalent terminal degree and typically hold an appointment at the level of Associate Professor (or equivalent) or above with an established record of independent research.
No. This specific residency is designed for scholars at least 5 years post-PhD/MFA. Current doctoral candidates are encouraged to look for our annual Graduate Student Research Workshop call.
No. The residency is strictly structured for scholars who are in the advanced writing, revision, or final completion stages of an existing research project. It is not intended for developing or beginning a new research project.
Scholars may work on any type of academic writing focused on the study of the Arab world, its heritage, or its global connections—including a research article, book manuscript, chapter, or essay.
Yes. The fellowship arranges and covers roundtrip economy flights to Abu Dhabi, accommodation on or near campus, and daily meals/dining allowance for work days during the three weeks.
Yes. Selected scholars are expected to be in residence at NYU Abu Dhabi for the entire duration of the program (January 11–29, 2027) to participate fully in seminars and group activities.
